Special Guardianship

A new kind of fostering...?

As we have mentioned elsewhere, many of our carers look after children on a long term basis, caring for them from childhood until they leave home as young adults.

Some prefer to have successive shorter term placements, sewing something of themselves into the lives of a number and variety of children.

We find that some carers would like to ensure a long term placement of a child or children so that they can provide the support and love they need until the child leaves home.
This is where SPECIAL GUARDIANSHIP comes in.  Starting as a foster placement, it is planned that within six to twelve months the carer(s) will become 'special guardians' for the child or children.  They then work directly with the local authority once their initial term with  Family Matters is over. They continue to look after that child or children until they leave care.

People who are considering adoption do well to look at special guardianship too.

We will be pleased to discuss this option with you during the initial recruitment and training process.
